Chilean Women Scientists (BCN)

The Periodic Table of Women Scientists, created by the Library of the National Congress of Chile, was developed in the context of the commemoration of February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It was designed with the purpose of making visible and recognizing the work of 118 outstanding women at the national level across 10 scientific fields.

This initiative also seeks to acknowledge the key role women play in Chile’s scientific community, especially given the significant gender gap that persists in the field.

The selection criteria for the featured scientists are based on the following aspects:

  • National and international awards: Women who have received recognition for their scientific contributions.
  • Pioneers: Women who entered scientific fields historically dominated by men.
  • Contribution to science communication: Scientists who have helped make knowledge more accessible.
  • Knowledge generation: Women recognized for their contributions to advancing knowledge in their respective scientific areas.
  • Academic trajectory: Scientists noted for their role in training new generations.

Each scientist is featured with a brief biographical profile, compiled from a variety of sources, including information provided directly by the scientists themselves, institutional websites, the press, online platforms, and the scientists’ own social media. All profiles have been prepared with research rigor and peer review.
