La Vía Láctea

THE MILKY WAY

This project aims to position the **study of the Milky Way (MW)**, addressing a strategic gap in Chilean astronomy. It proposes an interdisciplinary collaboration to investigate key aspects of galactic formation and evolution, utilizing advanced data from observatories and modern technologies. The goal is to establish Chile as a leader in this field, leveraging access to facilities in the southern hemisphere and fostering new generations of researchers. It focuses on areas such as the **galactic nucleus, the solar neighborhood, the interstellar medium, and the MW's interaction** with its surroundings, contributing to both fundamental science and technological and human development.

Our mission

Promote scientific excellence in the study of the Milky Way, leading cutting-edge research that integrates advanced observations, big data analysis, and theoretical modeling.

We are committed to strengthening Chilean astronomy by training new generations of researchers, developing interdisciplinary collaboration networks, and maximizing access to and utilization of the unique observational capabilities of the southern hemisphere.

Objectives

1

Characterize the chemical, dynamic, and age structure of the nucleus and outer regions of the Milky Way.

2

Develop stellar and star-forming region databases optimized for machine learning and large-scale analysis.

3

Produce advanced models of the formation and evolution of Milky Way-type galaxies.

4

Promote human capital development through thematic workshops and graduate schools in astrophysics.

5

Leverage unique access to facilities in the southern hemisphere to lead high-precision observations and analyses.

6

Promote international and multidisciplinary collaborations in galactic studies.
